King Charles Formally Strips Prince Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity

Through a decisive action, the reigning monarch has officially stripped the former Duke of York of his HRH style and his title of prince.

These alterations were formalized by issuing letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, which were published in the UK's official public record.

The entry declared: “The king has been pleased by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince of the realm’.”

A separate record affirmed the removal of the Duke of York from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.

The notice stated: “The king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to direct his secretary of state to ensure the titleholder to be struck from the peerage roll.”

Context of the Decision

This move follows increasing scrutiny over Andrew's connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including the posthumous publication of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.

Giuffre claimed that she was sexually abused by the former prince after being brought by Jeffrey Epstein, claims that Andrew has consistently denied.

Procedure of Removing Titles

Charles employed his royal prerogative—recognized rights held by the sovereign—after discussions with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through legislative action.

Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this authority, used to bestow or revoke titles and honors.

Because the HRH style is conferred by such documents, it can be revoked through the same process.

Additional Actions and Backing

Following the palace statement, the lord chancellor was instructed to prepare the required paperwork for the removal of titles.

The decision also includes Andrew giving up his tenancy on Royal Lodge, a 30-room royal property where he has resided for twenty years.

The government endorsed the king's decision.

Exception

In spite of the loss of titles, it was announced that Andrew will keep his South Atlantic medal, awarded for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
